Tax Return Implications of Government Shutdown

During a government shutdown, affected agencies are required to produce a Shutdown Contingency Plan to detail essential functions necessary to continue to operate and nonessential functions that will be closed during the shutdown. The IRS has listed the following functions as nonessential and therefore are currently closed until further notice:

1. Issuance of tax refunds
2. Processing of transcript requests
3. Audits
4. Processing amended returns
5. Responding to taxpayer questions

Although employers are not required to distribute W-2s until January 31st, we still advise getting your taxes prepared similar to any other normal year. Please contact your local CRI professional if you have any further questions regarding your personal tax situation.
