Scholar-in-Residence Program
CRI created its scholar-in-residence program initially to focus on
enhancing the quality of service provided by the firm’s accounting and auditing
(A&A) practice. The program since has expanded to encompass tax, forensic
accounting and firm-wide skills training, including its unique Leadership
Academy. Currently, CRI benefits from the expertise of four PhD
Scholars-in-Residence who facilitate training at all levels within the firm.
CRI’s executive committee utilizes these Scholars to communicate consistent
messaging and help implement the quality control process throughout the firm’s
various practice areas.
Steve Grice, PhD,
CPA, an associate professor of the University of Alabama at Birmingham and
the former director of the School of Accountancy at Troy University, serves as
the Accounting & Auditing Scholar-in-Residence. His role not only includes the
development of accounting and auditing training curriculum for the firm and
serving as a technical resource, but it also includes working as a part of the
quality control committee with a focus on quality control standardization and
consistency throughout the practice offices.
Frank Messina, DBA, CPA
and chair of the department of accounting and information systems at the
University of Alabama at Birmingham, serves as the Tax Scholar-in-Residence. In
addition to serving as a technical resource for tax issues, he is charged with
developing consistency and standardization throughout the firm’s tax practice.
Dr. Messina is also well known for his expertise regarding cooperative taxation
and has served on the national education committee of the National Society of
Cooperative Accountants (NSAC) for over 15 years.
Tommie Singleton, PhD,
serves as the Scholar-in-Residence for information technology and has recently
been appointed to the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) Information Technology
Executive Committee (ITEC). His CRI responsibility areas encompass IT audit,
forensic accounting and SAS 70 audits. Dr. Singleton is also an associate
professor in the Accounting and Information Systems Department at the University
of Alabama at Birmingham and co-author of the college textbook, IT Auditing
and Assurance. He is currently completing his third year as editor of the
Information Systems Audit and Control Journal and author of its “IT Audit
Basics” column, which is published six times a year.
CRI’s fourth scholar-in-residence,
Molly Epstein, PhD,
is an associate professor in the practice of management communication department
at the Goizueta Business School of Emory University. Through her leadership and
direction, the firm developed the Annual Leadership Academy, which focuses on
helping employees become better professionals. The first course employees
complete at the academy outlines CRI’s culture, vision, and values, while other
courses highlight professional skills such as teamwork, professional
communication, and coaching and mentoring.
